Item Rarity (Rare, Epic, Legendary)

Equipment can come with extra attributes. How rare items drop, what each attribute does and the limits per character.

Updated 2026-10-01 · 5 questions answered

Weapons, shields and armor can come with extra attributes: more skill, critical hits, life leech, elemental protection, speed and more. The more attributes, the rarer the item.

Rarity Attributes Colour How to get it
Rare 1 green Drops from monsters, quest rewards
Epic 2 purple Only at the The Forge, upgrading a Rare
Legendary 3 orange Only at the The Forge, upgrading an Epic

A rare item has a coloured frame everywhere it appears: inventory, backpacks, trade and depot. Its name and attributes also show in the rarity colour.

Tier: how far an item can go

Every piece of equipment has a tier from 0 to 3. The tier says the highest rarity the item can reach:

Tier Can reach Examples
0 Never gets attributes very weak items
1 Rare leather legs, brass helmet, battle axe
2 Epic crossbow, brass armor, dwarven shield
3 Legendary giant sword, magic plate armor, boots of haste, demon shield

The tier also decides how big the values are: the same attribute is stronger on a tier 3 item. Look at any equipment to see its tier:

You see a giant sword (Atk:46 Def:22).
Tier 3 (can reach Legendary).

Rings, amulets and stackable throwing weapons don't get attributes.

How rare items drop

When a monster dies, every equipment item with a tier in its loot has a chance to come as Rare. The chance is higher when:

  • the item is uncommon in that monster's loot;
  • the monster is stronger (gives more experience).

On weak monsters it is very rare (a Minotaur gives a Rare about once every 400 kills); on strong monsters it is much more common. No item goes above 25%.

You can't miss a Rare drop:

  • an explosion and fireworks around the corpse;
  • RARE! rising from the corpse in green;
  • the corpse blinks green for 6 seconds;
  • a message on screen and in the Loot channel, for you and your whole party.

Quest chests also have a 20% chance to give their item as Rare. Summon kills never drop rare items.

The attributes

Each kind of item can only receive certain attributes:

Item Possible attributes
Melee weapon Attack, Defense, its weapon skill, Critical Hit, Life Leech, Physical Damage, Bleeding. Elemental weapons also: their element's damage and status
Distance weapon Attack, Hit Chance, Distance Fighting, Critical Hit, Life Leech, Physical Damage, Bleeding
Wand / rod Magic Level, Critical Spell, Mana Leech, its element's damage and status
Shield Defense, Shielding, Physical Protection, Physical Reflect, Arrow Guard, Dodge

Armor Armor, Max Health, Physical Protection, protection against one element, Mitigation. Mage items also: Max Mana
Legs Armor, Max Health, protection against one element, Health Regen

An item never has the same attribute twice. Elemental protection is one of fire, energy, earth, ice or death.

Max Health and Max Mana depend on your vocation: knights get the full health value and a sixth of the mana; paladins get two thirds of the health and half of the mana; sorcerers and druids get a third of the health and the full mana.

What each effect does

  • Critical Hit / Critical Spell: chance that a hit (or spell) is critical, for +50% damage.
  • Life / Mana Leech: you recover that % of the damage you deal.
  • Damage (by element): hits of that element deal that % more.
  • Burning, Poisoning, Electrify, Bleeding: weapon hits only. When it triggers, the target takes 25% of the hit's damage over 10 seconds.
  • Freeze: when it triggers, the target is paralyzed for 2 seconds.
  • Protection: you take that % less damage of that type, including fields and conditions.
  • Dodge: chance that a hit does no damage at all.
  • Mitigation: chance that a hit loses 25% of its damage.
  • Physical Reflect: chance to send 30% of a physical hit back to the attacker.
  • Arrow Guard: protection against attacks from 2 or more squares away.
  • Skills, Magic Level, Max Health/Mana, Regen, Speed: work while the item is equipped.

Limits per character

Adding up all your equipment, each effect has a maximum:

Effect Maximum
Critical chance (all sources together) 20%
Life Leech 8%
Mana Leech 6%
Damage, per element 15%
Protection, per element 15%
Each status (Burning, Freeze...) 10%
Dodge 5%
Physical Reflect 10%
Mitigation 10%
Arrow Guard 15%

Anything above the limit does not count.

Important rules

  • NPCs don't buy rare items. They don't even appear in the sell list, so "sell all" never takes your Legendary by mistake.
  • Quests that ask for an item never take the rare version.
  • Rare items can be traded, stored in the depot or house and sold in the Player Shop, and keep their attributes.
  • Attributes only work when the item is equipped in the right slot.
  • When you die, rare items follow the normal death rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if an item can become rare?

Look at it. If it says "Tier 1, 2 or 3", it can.

Can my Rare become Legendary?

Only if it is tier 3, by upgrading it twice at the The Forge: Rare → Epic → Legendary.

Can I have the same attribute on two items?

Not twice on the same item. On different items, yes: they add up to the limit per character.

Why can't I sell my rare item to an NPC?

NPCs never buy rare items, to protect you from selling them by mistake. Sell them to players instead.

Do rare items drop from summon kills?

No.
